Raluca and Razvan ZAINESCU are two young, beautiful and successful people that got married last year and were planning to have a child in 2009. A few days before the New Year, life has struck them unexplainably: while he was sleeping, Razvan started to have convulsions, entered a coma, and hypoxia affected his brain. Since then, Razvan’s family has triesd to do the impossible in order to have their 32-year-old son back.
On December 28 2008, time froze for Raluca and Razvan Zainescu. They were in Cluj, at Razvan’s in-laws and got ready for the winter holidays. They were planning to go with their godfathers at a restaurant and feel good among friends. Disaster struck them unexpectedly.

The crisis that killed dreams
While he was taking a nap at noon, Razvan developed convulsions. “He woke me up because he had strong convulsions. He seemed to be suffocating, not being able to breathe “, his wife recalled. Soon after, Razvan lost his consciousness and Raluca called an ambulance. A SMURD car arrived in 15 minutes and when the paramedics entered the room, Razvan stopped breathing. 40 minutes of resuscitation and 6 adrenaline injections were needed to bring him back to life. Raluca recalls from that nightmare of a day: “All this time I was desperately screaming to not give up and not let him die. At one point I heard one of the medics say he’s breathing again”. During Razvan’s 40-minute resuscitation process, his brain was in hypoxia, meaning being poorly oxygenated. Now, Razvan has his brain badly affected. He then followed a severe coma. Eight months since that unfortunate day, the cause of the crisis remains unknown. Some hypotheses state the existence of epilepsy that might have debuted at this age, although many analyses negated the possibility. Others mention cardiac arrhythmia caused by stress, fatigue and constant dynamic rhythm followed by a relaxation period.

Ajuta-l pe Razvan

“Razvan is perfect. He is the love of my life. He has many hobbies, devours books, but I can say I was the passion of his life. Before the crisis I was planning to have my first child, but…” sadly the wife states, however finding the power to optimistically look forward.

The battle for each gesture
Not until January 19 has Razvan come out of the coma. During the coma and until he was sent abroad, Razvan developed a series of complications: cerebral edema from resuscitation, urinary infection, ear infection, hand thrombophlebitis and pulmonary infection. But Razvan showed signs that he’s not giving up the fight: he moved his head, made eye contact, moved a hand and leg. For the first time, the doctors gave recuperation chances. In February, the family managed to take him to Germany for recuperation, and the man evolved from the neurovegetative state to a minimal receptivity state. Each step represents a new hope for the family that does all the effort so that Razvan can become the strong and lively boy he once was.

Recuperation money
The high costs from the clinic in Germany determined the family to look for a more accessible place. Therefore, Razvan settled to recuperate in Poland for a couple of months. The financial drawback took the family to even worse grounds, and Raluca had to go back to work in order not to lose her job. In June, while at the Polish clinic, Raluca and Razvan reached one year of marriage. The blinks, the look in his eyes and a few gestures are the way in which Razvan communicates with his beloved ones. On June 20, because there were not any financial resources left, Razvan returned to Romania in order to recuperate home. “He’s doing gymnastics, massage, reflexotherapy, kinetotherapy, acupuncture. We are also paying a linguist and a lady that takes care of him while we are at work. “Equipments, drugs, developments can be seen, but we must come back again to the clinic in Germany, because this is his chance to recover”, says Raluca. In order to recuperate six months, the recommended period to obtain notable results, Razvan needs EUR 30.000 per month, totaling EUR 180.000.

Returned to his home country, after only a month, a period in which he has recovered a lot, an endothelial infection of subclavicular catheterization and an hebsiela pulmonaris infection appeared. This interrupted the treatment he was receiving in Constanta, at the hyperbaric medicine Center. After only 4 sessions, his mother and medical personnel heard him saying “mother” and “Ralu”!
Now Razvan is home and we are all waiting to recuperate after the 2-months’ therapy .he continues his home therapies and we are all awaiting for the moment to go again to Constanta, depending on the money the family will raise, hopefully to go the clinic in Germany for a real recuperation chance.
Above all, Razvan is a dignified and devoted husband, son, brother and friend, and also a strong, courageous and energetic man, who still has so much to say and give, a warrior who never gave up, not even when „statistically” there was no more hope.

All these give us – family and friends – the power to go on and fight for his chance!

It’s our turn now to stand by him and to support him in this difficult moment of his life.

But this is not possible without your help.
